A local councillor has called for a clear maintenance and improvement plan for the Stop Line Way, the popular traffic-free route connecting Chard and Ilminster.
Speaking at a recent meeting of Somerset Council, Councillor Sue Osborne raised concerns on behalf of residents about the condition of the route and questioned what steps are being taken to secure its long-term future.
The Stop Line Way forms part of National Cycle Network Route 33 and is widely used by walkers, cyclists and families. Councillor Osborne asked whether the route had been considered for active travel funding, whether it would be included in future transport planning, and what practical steps are needed to make it ready for future investment.
She also called on Somerset Council to work with local communities, town and parish councils, community networks and the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust to develop a costed condition, maintenance and improvement plan for the route.
In response, the Council confirmed its support for the Stop Line Way and recognised its role as part of Somerset's wider active travel network. However, councillors were told that current funding and officer resources are limited, with future priorities expected to be identified through the council's emerging Rural Network Plan.
Councillor Osborne said it was important that the Stop Line Way remains firmly on the council's agenda, ensuring local communities can continue to benefit from a safe, accessible and well-maintained route for years to come.
