Concerns about anti-social behaviour, street drinking and begging in Yeovil town centre have prompted calls for stronger action and effective enforcement powers to support local businesses and visitors.
At Somerset Council's Executive meeting, Cllr Tom Power questioned the Liberal Democrat administration about the status of Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) covering Yeovil town centre. In response, the administration confirmed that the PSPOs had lapsed and had not been renewed.
The administration also stated that it had not received reports from the public or partner agencies that would justify reapplying for a PSPO in the town centre.
Cllr Power raised the issue after hearing concerns that anti-social behaviour and street drinking appear to be becoming more common in parts of the town centre, potentially affecting confidence among shoppers and visitors.
Commenting after the meeting, Cllr Power said:
"Businesses and residents have been saying that they are concerned about anti-social behaviour in Yeovil town centre, including street drinking and begging.
"Yeovil is the principal shopping and service centre for many people across South Somerset. Residents should feel safe and confident when they visit the town centre, and local businesses should be able to operate in an environment that is welcoming for customers.
"I was concerned to learn that the relevant PSPOs have lapsed. While enforcement powers alone are not the answer, councils and the police must have the tools available to tackle persistent anti-social behaviour where it is causing problems.
"We need to be tougher on crime and anti-social behaviour and ensure that those responsible for making others feel intimidated or unsafe are properly dealt with."
Cllr Power said that Somerset Council should work closely with Avon and Somerset Police, local businesses and Yeovil Town Council to ensure appropriate measures are in place to tackle anti-social behaviour and support the town centre.
He added:
"Residents and businesses should not have to accept declining standards in our town centres as the new normal.
"Yeovil is a great town with a proud history, strong businesses and a fantastic community. We should be doing everything possible to make the town centre a place where people want to shop, work and spend their time."
