Local Conservative Councillor for Highbridge & Burnham South, John Cook-Woodman, has raised concerns that Somerset Council may look to introduce parking charges at Apex Park Car Park in Highbridge.
While Apex is not currently on the list of car parks facing new charges this year, Cllr Cook-Woodman warned that nothing is off the table as the Liberal Democrat-run Council faces a financial crisis. With a staggering £101 million in savings needed next year, residents are right to be worried.
Cllr Cook-Woodman said, "People use Apex Park for dog walks, fresh air, a fun family day out, or a quiet moment by the lake. Charging for that would be deeply unfair. Somerset Council is looking at charging for car parks that are currently free right across the county — and Apex could be next."
The Conservatives are urging Somerset Council to rule out any plans to charge at Apex and to be honest with residents about what could be under review.
