Last week Somerset Council appointed Christine Lawrence as an Honorary Alderwoman, recognising her outstanding and dedicated service to local government and the communities of West Somerset.
Honorary Alderman and Alderwoman appointments are lifetime honours and awarded to those who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and service.
Christine served both as a town and district councillor before being elected to Somerset County Council in 2001, representing the Dunster division. Following the formation of Somerset Council in April 2023, she continued her service until her stepping back in September 2025. Over her distinguished career, Christine has held several key roles, including:
- First woman Chair of Somerset County Council (2015)
- First portfolio holder for public health following its transfer from the NHS to the local authority in 2013
- First Chair of the Health and Well-Being Board
- Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care
- Member of the Adults and Health Scrutiny Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and the Local Community Network for Minehead and Watchet
- Council representative on Exmoor National Park Authority
The Somerset Conservatives thank Christine for her years of service to Somerset.
