Housing Pressures in Somerset

Somerset’s housing pressures are growing, with rising demand from:

  • Retirement migration.
  • Increase in second homes/holiday lets.
  • National efforts to provide asylum accommodation.
  • Major infrastructure projects like Hinkley Point C.
  • Stalled housing delivery due to phosphates issues.

At the last Council meeting, a motion was put forward asking the Government to recognise these combined pressures, invest more in local housing, and prioritise Somerset residents for social and affordable homes where legally possible. Liberal Democrat, Reform, and Labour councillors voted against it.
